The Raw Line
presenting the works from ;  Joram Roukes, KC Ortiz, Troy Lovegates

Arcade Art Gallery and The Jaunt are excited to announce 'The Raw Line'. A collaborative exhibition featuring the work of Joram Roukes (Netherlands), KC Ortiz (Denmark) and Troy Lovegates (Canada). ‘The Raw Line’ opens on the 4th of September at Arcade Art Gallery in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan.

The title of the show, ‘The Raw Line, refers to the works of Joram Roukes, KC Ortiz and Troy Lovegates. Although each artist has their own distinct aesthetic, their joint practice is defined by the raw lines featured in their paintings and drawings.  As a collective, their work is direct, honest and makes no concessions. KC Ortiz uses raw lines to make political commentary, depict civil unrest, and American pop culture. Troy Lovegates utilizes the strength of line in his drawings of underrepresented communities and the life of societies hidden in plain sight. Finally, Joram Roukes showcases these same raw lines in his approach to collaging American fauna, new-school graffiti and historical statues.

The Raw Line’ is presented in collaboration with The Jaunt. The Jaunt is a unique project that is best described as a traveling art residency project. They send artists to places they have never been, in order to find new inspiration. Now in times of COVID-19, where international travel has not been possible for the last year and a half, we are excited to have The Jaunt bring various parts of the world to Taiwan, and share the joy of discovering a new place through the eyes of the artists.

Alongside the exhibition with Joram Roukes, KC Ortiz and Troy Lovegates, there will be a selected overview of prints from artists who have worked together with The Jaunt. These artists are Sasa Ostoja, Tellas Andy Welland, Greg Ito, Anna Valdez and Ellen Rutt, and the three featured artists from the exhibition.

Joram Roukes, KC Ortiz, Troy Lovegates

“The Raw Line”是與 The Jaunt 合作推出的。

Artworks :

Joram Roukes :

Born in 1983 the small city of Lelystad, The Netherlands, Joram Roukes earned his BFA in fine arts at the Minerva Academy of Arts in Groningen in 2006. In 2008 Roukes was awarded a stipend from National Arts Foundation ‘Fonds BKVB, which is currently known as Mondriaanfonds, which he used to set up an artist residency in Brooklyn, NYC. Joram Roukes’ work is a dark, humorous play on topics that range from popular culture, global affairs and personal experience. Creating juxtapositions of imagery to create abstract narratives and figures that evoke introspection and contemplation. His work gained attention from several international galleries like Thinkspace in Los Angeles, StolenSpace in London among others. He has since shown his work in Copenhagen, Paris, Berlin, San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles and London to name a few.

Since 2015 Roukes is actively painting large scale murals across the globe, applying his old love of painting graffiti on a larger and more mature scale.

Joram Roukes now lives and works in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

KC Ortiz:

KC Ortiz, b. 1978, Chicago, USA. Lives and works in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Ortiz began painting graffiti at the age of 12 on the rooftops and trains of his hometown Chicago and a winding road of graffiti, street life, prison and photojournalism led to his paintings and studio work.
His work is an exploration on survival, preservation, and resistance in a world that is rapidly changing under political upheaval, economic inequality, misinformation, and technological advances.
Ortiz examines and questions both our individual and collective roles and responsibilities in these current times and to future generations and civilizations.

Troy Lovegates:

Troy Lovegates, widely known as "OTHER", is an artist currently based in Oakland, CA. His works are heavily patterned and saturated with hyper color. With a knack for the use of found materials and the unification of wildly disparate elements, both material and aesthetic, Lovegates uses everything from spray paint, oil stick, water color, acrylic, and ink to create works on canvas and paper as well as wooden sculptures.

A self-described "collector of lost souls,” the artist focuses on the figure as story, building motifs through heavily condensed mark making. The figures in his work are sympathetically drawn from equal parts caricature and realistic observation.  Lovegates is constantly revising and adapting previous efforts, reintegrating them into current bodies of work that reflect the history of their making.  His hand-carved wooden pieces bring his paintings to life as objects.  The powerfully weathered people in his imagery are often real, captured through photographs and observation taken while on his travels over the years. Motivated by his own dreams and nightmares, Troy Lovegates works are emotive arrests of an awe-inspiring imagination.
